Herbal medicine at Chinese Acupuncture Clinic
The practitioner at Chinese Acupuncture Clinic has been qualified to dispense patent herbs (tablets) since 2008 after receiving a Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) from the Northern College of Acupuncture, York, in Chinese Patent Herbal Medicine. This was followed by another PGC in Chinese Patent Herbal Medicine in 2021 at Phoenix Medical School and then two more further years of studying, culminating in a Diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine.
These qualifications allow the practitioner, after the initial consultation with the patient, to dispense herbs in tablet form or individually in raw, granules or liquid form. These are normally dispensed as a formula (recipe of herbs), usually granules, that are dissolved in hot water and drank when cool.
Raw herbs versus patent medicines
Raw herbs are used when flexibility and strength are required and can be advantageous in acute or serious illness conditions. Patent herbs are easier to take, compliance is better and with prolonged use can be both effective and safe. Most of the problems seen in clinic are of the chronic type and patent herbs are widely used to slowly increase the build-up of the body’s defences.
Principles of treatment
The first treatment will involve an initial consultation, where the patient’s medical history will be noted, the reason for treatment and the diagnosis of the pulse and tongue picture. From the consultation, the practitioner will determine the health of the patient and the cause of the imbalance in their body. These findings will be discussed with the patient and a treatment plan drawn up and will include which formulae and herbs will be used and for how long. Acupuncture, lifestyle and diet may require inclusion in the plan.
Follow up consultations occur periodically, to check on the patient’s progress and to modify the formula through dosage or ingredients. This modification occurs naturally as the patient’s health and strength improve; the seasons change along with other environmental factors. This modality of health care is truly tailored to the patient’s requirements and need.
